I was so excited when I was asked if I’d like to review the Back to the Roots Growing Gift Set!  I love to cook with fresh ingredients so I knew this would be the perfect match.  First let me tell you a little about bit about the company and then we’ll get to the products.

In a college class Alejandro & Nikhil learned that mushrooms could grow on recycled coffee grounds.  After watching hours of how-to videos and turning our fraternity kitchen into a big science experiment, we eventually decided to give up our corporate job offers to instead become full-time mushroom farmers. What started as curiosity about urban farming has turned into a passion for “undoing food” and reconnecting families to it through fun, delicious and sustainable “ready to grow” and “ready to eat” products.

With four kids, the first product we opened was the Water Garden.  It literally comes with everything you need to get started…even a coupon to purchase your fish.  We went to the store, picked out a Red Betta fish which we named Betta, lol and got started.  The directions are very simple to follow so I let the kids do this from start to finish and they had no problem what so ever.

We put the tank where we wanted, placed the rocks in, filled it with water, added the drops that are necessary and then put the fish in (in his container) so he could adjust to the temperature.  About a half an hour later we released him into the tank and watched him swim all around.

After that we placed the top on, made sure the stones were all rinsed, added those into the little containers, placed on the drops, and then added the seeds.  You can presoak your seeds so they can grow faster, but I’ll be honest, they were so excited they didn’t read that part.

No need to worry though, our seeds started to grow within a few days and you can see them beginning to sprout!  I think it’s so neat that you don’t have to worry about soil or anything so there’s no mess.  Now all you do is wait a little bit and soon you’ll have full grown plants on top!

Isn’t that amazing?  They grew that much within a week, and of course the kids were so excited!  I love this product because it teaches the kids responsibility and allows them to grow their own food too.

Here’s how it works:

Aquaponics is a closed-loop, sustainable farming method that combines traditional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). It uses 90% less water than traditional farming.

  1. Fish produce ammonia-rich waste which can become toxic for your fish if allowed to accumulate.
  2. Beneficial bacteria in your Water Garden converts the ammonia into nitrates. These naturally occurring bacteria grow really well in your plant pots.
  3. Nitrates are amazing food for plants! As the plants continuously uptake the nitrates as nutrients for growth, they are also cleaning the water for your fish.

Back to the Roots offers a lot of other products too!  Breakfast products which are delicious!

and…

Grow your own mushrooms and herbs…we still have to do these!

It has been a pleasure reviewing these products, and I hope you’ll enjoy them too!
